L\u2019Harmonie des saisons will reveal this masterpiece in the authentic manner of its 19th-century premiere by Faur\u00e9 himself. L\u2019Harmonie des saisons will reveal this masterpiece in the authentic manner of its 19th-century creation by Faur\u00e9 himself. The work is rarely performed in its original \u201cchurch\u201d version of January 1888, with vocal forces and orchestra on period instruments adapted to this context.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Cantique de Jean Racine<\/em> is a composition by Gabriel Faur\u00e9 to the text\u00a0\u201cVerbe \u00e9gal au Tr\u00e8s-Haut\u201d by poet Jean Racine. It is one of Faur\u00e9\u2019s earliest published pieces. He wrote it as a 19 year old student at the\u00a0Ecole Niedermeyer de Paris, winning him the first prize in composition in 1865. The piece is an extraordinary example of the young composer\u2019s unique talent.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Messe basse<\/em> pour voix de femmes has a most interesting history which charts the course of Faur\u00e9\u2019s compositional career over a 25 year period. It was initially conceived in 1881 as collaboration with fellow composer Andr\u00e9 Messager, in which three of the five movements were composed by Faur\u00e9, and the other two by Messager. It was written for\u00a0three part female choir, accompanied by organ and a solo violin. In 1906 Faur\u00e9 returned to the work to fulfill a publishing contract. He replaced the Messager movements with newly composed music of his own.
