Didem Basar, kanun & Patrick Graham, percussion

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais, Brownsburg-Chatham

Didem Basar
Born into a family steeped in music, kanun (Turkish cithare) performer and composer Didem Basar began her studies in music at the State Conservatory of Turkish Music at the Technical University of Istanbul at the age of eleven. After completing the Conservatory program in kanun, she continues her education at the same institution and obtains an undergraduate degree in composition. Her interest in studying the effects of music on society led her to pursue a master’s degree in mevlevi music analysis at Marmara University. She taught Turkish music and kanun playing techniques at the Haliç University Conservatory and the Istanbul State Conservatory from 2001 until her arrival in Canada in 2007. Moving to Montreal then gave him the opportunity to reinterpret his own music in a new environment whose liveliness results from the convergence of multiple cultures from different regions of the world.

After fifteen years dedicated to the composition and accompaniment of numerous artists and ensembles, Didem Basar now devotes himself to a more personal project, combining classical Turkish and Western musical influences. Following this musical journey, was born his new album Levantine Rhapsody in February 2020. On a sound canvas linking East and West, the musician and composer created a dialogue between kanun and instruments from Western music (flutes, percussions, violin and cello). To this combination is added the integration of Turkish makams (modes), rhythmic cycles as well as improvisation, on compositions with a resolutely impressionist approach.

Patrick Graham
Patrick Graham is an accomplished percussionist, improviser, composer and instructor based in Montreal. His fascination with percussion has taken him on a journey around the world, sometimes to study contemporary Western percussion, the Middle Eastern drum tradition or the rhythms of South India and taiko in Japan. He re-imagines these cosmopolitan influences and creates a vast palette of colors through a range of instruments. Graham has been the co-creator of many music, dance and multidisciplinary projects that have won numerous awards. It appears on dozens of discs and film original tapes.

His first solo album, Rheō, was on CBC Radio 2’s 2009 The Signal list. In 2020, he released Lumina, his new solo album made entirely of improvised percussion, and Unnatural, a collaboration with electronic music producer John Sellekaers. For the past few years, Patrick Graham has been touring internationally with the renowned ensemble Constantinople.
