La contrebasse dans le trio jazz : l’émancipation d’un instrument accompagnateur
Centre d’art de Richmond, 1010 rue Principale nord, Richmond
Le Centre d’art de Richmond invites you to a musical evening that is both festive and educational: a concert commented on by two teachers from the music school: Jonathan Guillaume Boudreau (teacher of double bass and electric bass) and Kevin Sullivan (drum teacher), who will be accompanied by Julian Gutierrez.
Hosted by Jonathan-Guillaume Boudreau, professor of double bass and electric bass at CAR, this evening in Formula 5 to 7 will allow you to explore the traditional role of double bass in jazz and how, why, and then how it has evolved.
This demonstration will be done by the interpretation of jazz standards as well as pieces from the American Songbook. It will be supplemented by brief comments, examples and explanations.
Ultimately, this concert is a playful journey through musical codes that will bring new light to this wonderful conversational music that is jazz.

Aux deux hémisphères
Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais, Brownsburg
Aux deux hémisphères presents on stage the compositions and works of inspiration from the first album by cellist and composer Dominique Beauséjour-Ostiguy, with his acolyte, pianist Jean-Michel Dubé.
Presented in an original formula and accessible to all audiences, Aux deux hémisphères really allows you to enter the process of creation of Dominique: not only are on the program original compositions, but also featured works of the repertoire for cello and piano that were sources of inspiration in the writing process of the young composer and cellist.
In both hemispheres, it makes us travel between the torment and passion of post-romantic European composers such as Rachmaninov and Fauré, the heat and fiery rhythms of Argentine composers such as Piazzolla, to finally land here, in Quebec, in this universe inspired and tinged by these two hemispheres.
Lyricism, virtuosity, intensity and discovery: this is what awaits you with Aux deux hémisphères.

Claude Debussy: Images oubliées with Stéphane Tétreault & Olivier Hébert-Bouchard
Théâtre du Lac-Brome, 9, Chemin du Mont-Écho, Knowlton
Reinvented for cello and piano by two artists whose reputation is well known, these forgotten images paint a timeless portrait of this musical legend.
By combining these two instruments, the atmospheres evoked in these pieces are therefore more defined. By transforming the «solo» aspect of these works into a design for two instruments in dialogue, Debussy’s sound language resonates differently, sometimes more intimate, sometimes more grandiose, but always with the intention of creating a strong connection with the public. The evocative power of these compositions is therefore inevitably altered, since they now tell their story but also that of the two musicians who transmit them.
Through this singular and thematic concert, the cellist Stéphane Tétreault and the pianist Olivier Hébert-Bouchard offer you a retrospective all in music on the life of Claude Debussy!

Dialogues – piano et violoncelle
Centre Saint-Romuald, 500, rue Saint-Hilaire, Farnham
This concert explores the duality of two titanic masterpieces for cello and piano, from the pen of a woman and a man born thirteen years apart, both virtuosic instrumentalists but with surprisingly distinct musical voices. Centred on works dear to the musicians, it is a bridge between two worlds, a conversation between two instruments and two composers, a dialogue between artists and the public.
Rachmaninov is considered by some to be the pinnacle of the romantic era; his lush melodies and undisguised sentimentalism are coloured with surprisingly progressive harmonies that sometimes sound very close to jazz. His sonata, though probably better known than Clarke’s, is still largely overshadowed by his orchestral and solo piano works. Written in the same year as the famous Concerto n° 2 for piano, this work heralds Rachmaninoff’s return to composition after a period of crippling depression following the unfavourable reception of his first symphony in 1897.
Clarke, an internationally renowned violist, is often considered a composer of «English Impressionism», and if the 1919 Sonata recalls works by Debussy and Ravel, it is also openly romantic. Clarke’s work follows a similar renaissance three years after she moved to the US, having been denied by her abusive father. It is interesting to note that both works begin with a rhapsodic and improvised introduction which leads to a more rhythmic exhibition. They are each composer’s only foray into the genre of duet sonata, representing both a conclusive experience and a masterpiece.
At this concert, we will also hear a brand new creation by the Quebec composer Christian Thomas.

Conférence Le saxophone dans l’histoire du jazz
Théâtre du Lac-Brome, 9, Chemin du Mont-Écho, Knowlton
Lecture by Stanly Péan
The saxophone in the history of jazz invented by Adolphe Sax and patented in Paris in March 1846, the saxophone is as much appreciated by jazz musicians as by their colleagues from the world of so-called classical music, even if the qualities required of the instrument are different for each of these styles. In jazz, the saxophone has allowed musicians to express their individuality, and that is why the raucous sounds and the hum of the instrument contribute to the texture of the music. In classical music, the musician usually prefers an instrument with a clear and finely controlled sound, whose precision is similar to that of the clarinet.
With the musical support of a trio led by the virtuoso Samuel Blais, as comfortable in jazz as in the repertoire of classical music, and as brilliant on the saxophones of various registers, the writer and music lover Stanley Péan traces the evolution of Coleman Hawkins’ instrument to his contemporary disciples, going through all the stylistic variations of jazz.
About the speaker
It was the sound of the trumpet that put host and writer Stanley Péan on his way to the blue note as a teenager. Over the years, the curiosity of the Saguenéen of Haitian origin has turned into a passion that he shares at ICI Musique.

The greatest quality of this recital is undoubtedly its insistence on the simple beauty of music always very accessible. After 75 minutes of music, no one can doubt that the harp has a powerful seductive power that it is up to the performer to reveal, which Valérie Milot knows how to do with great fervour.
