CAMMAC Music Centre

Giri Kedaton – Balinese Music and Dance Ensemble

Centre musical CAMMAC Music Centre, 85, Chemin CAMMAC, Harrington

An invitation to discover new sonic horizons through the enthralling world of Balinese music and dance! The Giri Kedaton Balinese Music Ensemble, in residence at the Université de Montréal, is one of the few active gamelans in Canada. The gamelan is a percussion orchestra of gongs, metallophones and drums from the island of Bali, Indonesia. The spectacular beauty of the instruments, the sparkling timbre of their bronze tones, and the superb choreography make a Giri Kedaton performance a fascinating experience. Giri Kedaton brings together some twenty musicians who, in addition to their passion for Balinese music, are driven by the collective ideal that characterizes the spirit of the gamelan. The ensemble also includes three female dancers and one male dancer, all trained in Bali by the great masters.

The ensemble’s name, Giri Kedaton, is Balinese for “royal mountain”, or Mount-Royal, evoking a link between Bali and Montreal that is both tangible and timeless.

Mehdi Ghazi

Église de Sainte-Pétronille, 27 Chemin de l’Église, Sainte-Pétronille, Île d’Orléans

One cannot imagine a more natural gift for his instrument than the Algerian-born pianist Mehdi Ghazi. Since his arrival in Canada in 2006, he has continued to fascinate with his virtuosity and sensitivity. In 2010, he was selected by the Glenn Gould Foundation as part of a tribute to the great Canadian pianist, leaving a very strong impression on nothing less than filmmaker Bruno Monsaingeon. We will have the chance to hear it in a beautiful and colorful program with, among others, Liszt’s Transcendent Performance Studies and Ravel’s Mirrors.
