The Saint-Gilles Cultural Space opened its doors to the public for its first annual program in the fall of 2021 as a result of a personal initiative. The director of what is now the NPO ECSG / SGCC (Espace culturel Saint-Gilles / Saint-Gilles Cultural Centre), acquired a former Methodist-Presbyterian church built in 1830 in the scenic and heritage area of Cushing, Brownsburg-Chatham, whose space is perfectly suited to hosting small musical and theatrical ensembles as well as other artistic groups. The venue’s character and architecture provide exceptional acoustics and allow patrons to experience events in an intimate and cozy atmosphere while providing them access to this historic building on the old Front of Chatham that has played a leading role in the region over the years.

In this splendid building, dating back almost 200 years, able to accommodate up to 125 people, we offer to citizens of the Regional County Municipality of Argenteuil and beyond, musical performances (classical, jazz, chanson, folk, etc.), literary events (storytelling, poetry, slam, author’s booths and workshops, etc.), arthouse cinema (partnership with the Ciné-Club La Branche, member of the Association des cinémas parallèles du Québec), visual arts events (openings, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, etc.), and much more.

Ensemble Ménestrel • Janelle Lucyk, voice & violin • Kerry Bursey, voice & lute

Through voices, a myriad of plucked strings, and some violin, Ménestrel performs old music in an intimate manner, with ayres and ballads recounting the transience of good fortune in the life of a voyager. In The Nine Maidens, these English-language folk songs provide vivid imagery of age-old expeditions, daring escapes and voyaging delights. In response to the action packed folk songs, baroque airs offer reflection and represent the inward feelings of the heroines. Encore Baroque presents performances by major composers for the harpsichord. De l’autre côté du miroir

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais, Brownsburg-Chatham

The musical experience “On the other side of the mirror”, as imagined and presented by the duo Cordelia, comes to shake up the conventional landmarks of the chamber music concert. Contemplation, humor and rapture are at the rendezvous as the two experienced musicians of this violin-ensemblepiano lead their audience into an innovative musical adventure by highlighting a diverse repertoire from the work of revolutionary composers or politically committed to their time, as well as original compositions by violinist Vanessa Marcoux.

Inspired by the resilience of these artists for whom escape to fabulous musical landscapes was the only possible way out of the realities of their time, Duo Cordelia testifies to the depth of our essential relationship with music. And at times, the repertoire giving way to improvisation, the room unites for a moment in an impetus of shared creation.

Aux deux hémisphères

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais, Brownsburg

Aux deux hémisphères presents on stage the compositions and works of inspiration from the first album by cellist and composer Dominique Beauséjour-Ostiguy, with his acolyte, pianist Jean-Michel Dubé.

Presented in an original formula and accessible to all audiences, Aux deux hémisphères really allows you to enter the process of creation of Dominique: not only are on the program original compositions, but also featured works of the repertoire for cello and piano that were sources of inspiration in the writing process of the young composer and cellist.

In both hemispheres, it makes us travel between the torment and passion of post-romantic European composers such as Rachmaninov and Fauré, the heat and fiery rhythms of Argentine composers such as Piazzolla, to finally land here, in Quebec, in this universe inspired and tinged by these two hemispheres.

Lyricism, virtuosity, intensity and discovery: this is what awaits you with Aux deux hémisphères.

Autour de Lili Boulanger

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais, Brownsburg-Chatam

Uliana Drugova, violon Michel-Alexandre Broekaert, piano

With a program for piano and violin, this concert explores the universe of the French composer Lili Boulanger (1893-1918). The performance of the pieces alternates with commentaries highlighting the close links that have been forged between Lili Boulanger and composers such as Debussy, Fauré, Bacewicz and Piazzolla. By bringing together all these artists in one musical moment, we are reimagining a 20th century French salon, where women have their place as much as men. How far would his fate have taken her if the disease had not taken Lili Boulanger at the age of twenty-four?

De Bach à Zappa

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais

With From Bach to Zappa, Quasar offers an eclectic, energetic and festive concert that reveals the many facets of the saxophone. Between the universe of the great baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach and that of Frank Zappa, the quartet crosses in 75 minutes a distance for the least cosmic, while passing by Alexander Glazounov, which offers us the unique romantic masterpiece for saxophones or Will Gregory, whose piece will make ‘giguer’ the baritone sax (to name just a few)… while granting
a prominent place for new Quebec works created by Quasar over the past three decades.

Presented for the first time as part of the series “Le Conseil des arts de Montréal en tournée” on the island of Montreal, the concert Bach à Zappa was also presented across Quebec (Forestville, Rimouski, Quebec, Shawinigan, Havre-Saint-Pierre, Richmond, Victoriaville, etc.), in the Yukon, in California, in Bulgaria, in Estonia, in Russia as well as in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

Nebulae

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais

The harp positions itself as a witness to the evolution of humans and their relationship with the universe. From the primary instrument called the lyre which it evokes in a constellation, then transcended by a complex harp with a thousand possibilities; a parallel is drawn between the evolution of art and science.

This grandiose and omnipotent journey predisposes a philosophical reflection on existence. Ultimately, the human being adopts a humble positioning in relation to the universe. He becomes autonomous, realizing that the grandeur of reality around him is in itself poetry

This intimate concert tinged with reflections inspired by the astrophysicists Carl Sagan and Hubert Reeves, humor and intoxicating music will weave a precious link between the artist and the music lovers.

The new show Nebulae by harpist Valérie Milot presents an artistic and philosophical reflection inspired by space exploration.

Valérie Milot is a musician and entrepreneur who makes her way off the beaten track. Defending the harp at the front of the stage, she dusts it with her shots by highlighting its power and unsuspected sounds.

Sought-after soloist, Valérie regularly performs a rich concertante repertoire with orchestra (Les Violons du Roy, Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal) with recognized conductors (Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Bernard Labadie, Nicolas Ellis, Mathieu Lussier, Jean-François Rivest, among others). Prominent musician on the web, her YouTube channel has accumulated more than three million views on her musical performances.
Recognized by his peers and the public, numerous awards mark his career. In 2008, Valérie received the Prix avec Grande Distinction at the end of her studies at the Conservatoire with Caroline Lizotte, and won the Prix d’Europe. She is also the first harpist in almost 100 years to win this important scholarship which allowed her to study in New York with Rita Costanzi. Several awards follow thereafter, including Revelation of the year Radio-Canada, Prize for performance at the International Harp Competition of the Cité des Arts de Paris, Opus Discovery Award of the year, the Creation Performing Arts Award at the Arts Excellence gala of Culture Mauricie, as well as several nominations at the ADISQ Gala.

Valérie plays on an ‘Apollonia’ harp by Salvi, graciously lent by the company Canimex in Drummondville, owned by the patron Roger Dubois.  Activity offered as part of the Journées de la culture.

Portrait musical – Table ronde et récital

Espace culturel Saint-Gilles, 562, Rte des Outaouais

The very idea of ‘musical portrait’ has the appeal of paradox. Indeed, as Carl Dahlhaus traced its genesis in L’Idée de la musique absolue (Genève, Contrechamps, 1997), the discourses on music in the Romantic age, relayed and reinforced by formalist aesthetics, have imposed a conception of music as non-significant art and unfit for representation.  Although it is nowadays criticized and relativized, this thought remains nonetheless dominant, if only in the form of a theoretical «unconscious». How to understand and consider, in these conditions, the persistence of a mimetic imagination among composers, and the poetic fertility of the notion of “portrait” in the musical repertoire?

The Guitaromanie concert brings back to life the frenzy and wonder of a musical performance where spontaneity blends with virtuosity.
