However, opportunities to hear the music of this great champion of tango nuevo performed by the ensemble for which it was largely composed are rare: a tango quintet in which violin, piano, electric guitar, and double bass complement the iconic sound of the bandoneon, the bellows-driven instrument on which Piazzolla was an absolute virtuoso.

It was after meeting at traditional jam sessions in Montreal that the three partners decided to come together to create a repertoire. Coming from different backgrounds (classical, jazz, traditional), they quickly realized how their diverse influences allowed them to reinterpret traditional Quebec music and create a unique sound that reflects their style—modern and dynamic, yet full of finesse and subtlety. Although their lyrics all come from the traditional repertoire, most of the instrumental pieces as well as the arrangements of their songs are original compositions that reflect the variety of styles they have mastered. The inclusion of jig numbers in their show makes their performances even more impressive.

Featuring: Élisabeth Moquin, violin and jigging ∙ Élisabeth Giroux, cello ∙ Thierry Clouette, guitar and Irish bouzouki

General admission: $45 | Ages 30 and under: $25 | Free for children 12 and under

L’Harmonie des saisons: Sommeil et Songes de la nuit

Sleep scenes play an important role in Baroque music, particularly in French lyric tragedy.

More than just a poetic device, they suspend the action and create a space conducive to dreams, illusion, and the supernatural, where music becomes a true driving force of the drama.

In Lully’s Atys and Persée, these moments create an atmosphere of calm and suspension. This tradition continues with Desmarest, Campra, and Marin Marais, whose Symphony for Alcyone’s Sleep exemplifies the gentle, enveloping orchestral style characteristic of these scenes.

With Couperin, Rameau, and Vivaldi, sleep takes on a more symbolic and instrumental role: it evokes reverie, memory, and the uncertain states between wakefulness and dreaming.

Featuring: Philippe Gagné, tenor (countertenor) ∙ Anne Thivierge and Johanna Marsden, flutes ∙ Julia Wedman and Jessy Dubé, violins ∙ Cristina Prats-Costa, viola ∙ Mélisande Corriveau, cello and bass viol ∙ Pierre Cartier, double bass ∙ Olivier Fortin, organ, harpsichord, and conductor
