The Department of Music at Bishop’s University presents Musique Chez Nous, a student-run concert series designed to appeal to all tastes, featuring the talents of local musicians, visiting artists, and the University’s own music faculty.

Home of the Music Department Musique chez nous concert series, Bandeen Hall, a 160-seat concert venue built in 1898 with exceptional acoustics, 12 spacious, , well-lit and fully equipped practice rooms, 18 station computer labs complete with midi keyboards, Finale and the Creative Cloud.  Music students are granted access to a two world-class 7-foot Hamburg Steinway pianos, a 7-foot American Steinway, and a 22-stop Karl Wilhelm pipe organ, as well as the professional quality Purple Records recording studio.

Ensemble – Philippe Dunnigan

Renowned violinist Philippe Dunnigan is joined by Bishop’s own Fannie Gaudette (piano/voice) for any evening of original songs and compositions for piano. They will be joined by Camille Paquette-Roy (cello) and Olivier Hébert (double bass).

Bishop’s own Jon Gearey (guitar) and Louise Thibault-Gearey (vocals) are joined by saxophonist Frank Lozano and drummer Simon Bergeron for an evening of jazz standards and original compositions.

Retired music faculty member Andrew P. MacDonald is joined by pianist Carmen Picard for an evening of transcriptions and original compositions by Bach, Schumann, Gershwin and MacDonald.

Inuk soprano Deantha Edmunds is accompanied by members of the Philippe Dunnigan string quartet in a program of traditional and contemporary Indigenous music from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ms. Edmunds is also the semester’s Artist-in-Residence.

Etudes en Jazz is a new, cross-genre interpretation of Chopin’s 24 Etudes op. 10 & 25, infusing the rich diversity of contemporary Jazz language and grooves into the original pieces.  Opening: Julien Gagné – Winner 2023 Festival-concours de musique de Sherbrooke – first place in the concerto category, college level.

Small World Project: Macroscope

Sébastien Dufour (ukulele, charango, strumstick, banjo-uke), Patrick Graham (percussions) Frédéric Samson (double bass)

Having emerged like a UFO on the music scene in 2008, the unclassifiable Small World Project amazes with its arsenal of miniature instruments such as the ukulele, charango, banjolele, toy piano, melodica, along with percussion and a double bass. The trio of multi-instrumentalists continues to explore cinematic-style music in their latest album, Macroscope.

Accademia de’ Dissonanti – Elinor Frey: L’art de variation

Elinor Frey, cello et Nicola Canzano, hapsichord

The Accademia de’ Dissonanti was founded in 2020 by cellist and gambist Elinor Frey. The ensemble won a 2024 Opus Prize.

René Lussier et Robbie Kuster

René Lussier (guitare et daxophone) et Robbie Kuster (batterie, égouine, orgue à clous)

An emblematic figure of contemporary Quebec music, René Lussier today escapes any label. Robbie Kuster is a commendable accompanist to the biggest names in the jazz and Quebec pop industry. Alternating between compositions and improvisations, this duo deliberately goes beyond the limits.

Mathieu Désy trio

As an associate professor in the Music Department since 2020, Dr. Mathieu Désy will finally get to propose his debut concert to Bishop’s community. Charles Papasoff on bass clarinet and Paul Picard on Percussion complete his aerial jazz trio.
